Coffee was first introduced to British-colonised Malawi by missionaries during the 1880s. During this time, commercial growing areas were mainly concentrated in Thyolo and Mulanje, in the South. Unlike in other East African colonies, coffee never quite became popular in Malawi. Various factors, including the success of the tobacco industry, as well as the plantation system created by the British colonists who owned large coffee estates, prevented the Coffee crop from becoming the cornerstone that it is in its neighbours to the North, Kenya and Tanzania. Only much later, after independence, was the potential realised , and then actualised with the combination of redistribution of land and the rise of organised cooperatives.
